Something Visual

Dan Kirkman

There's something about the process of making a film, be it a wedding video or business web clip, I find it addictive and almost euphoric; the creative license it allows is endless.

– Daniel Kirkman

My filming career began straight out of high school where being a 'coastie' meant that the surf industry appealed to me.

I was fortunate enough to be hired as a freelance cameraman by a number of surf film-makers. They sent me to Hawaii for three consecutive surf seasons to document all the action, in and out of the water.

I went on to film and produce my own surf film in the Tuamotu Islands and at the infamous Teahupoo, surf break in Tahiti. It was at this time that I became absorbed in the craft of editing.

My love of storytelling and the connection this makes with the audience is what drives me, and I'm my own biggest critic – if an edit still gives me goosebumps after I've watched it back 20 times, I know I've created something special that my clients will love.

I have developed my own unique style of filming and editing. In many ways, my process for creating a film can be compared to a builder; the floorplans are my storyboard and concept of ideas leading up to the start of the job.

The slab and framework are like the clips arranged in the edit suite. The coats of paint, light fittings and design features are my music choices, colour grading and transition effects.

The builder builds you a home to make lasting memories, I produce content to preserve your memories.
